What Can I Expect When I Offer to Volunteer?
This will vary from organisation to organisation. Some will invite you to a formal interview and ask you to complete a formal application form. Others will invite you in for an informal chat. This is your opportunity to find out as much as you can about the organisation and what they have to offer.
It is important that you are clear about what you are asked to do. If you have any concerns contact the Volunteer Centre for advise.
Will Volunteering Affect My Benefits?People in receipt of means tested benefits such as income support and Job Seekers Allowance (JSA) can volunteer and receive out of pocket expenses providing they comply with current regulations. For further information see the DWP publication “A Guide to Volunteering While on Benefits”. This is available from your Jobcentre Plus or from the DWP website www.dwp.gov
How Much Time do I Need to Give?Some organisations want a regular commitment, and some organisations require a forward time commitment. This will vary from organisation but it is up to you to decide how much time you are willing to give. It may be better to start with a limited number of hours and later expand your commitment.
Do I Need Any Special Skills?
Many roles do not require any special skills. Some organisations are able to provide the training you need to carry out your volunteering role.
Will I Need a CRB Check?
Most organisations working with people who are Elderly, or with children or vulnerable groups will need to Police check you before you are able to start volunteering. This is standard procedure and is nothing for you to worry about.
Will I Need a Reference?
Some organisations may ask for references. This can be from a previous or current employer or from somebody who can provide you with a personal reference.
